Czech Republic Embassy Complex

Stepping away from the rigid and solid architecture that embassy buildings usually hold, this embassy complex represents a friendly and a welcoming gesture through its fusion of the two different cultures. Thus, this act of bringing two polar opposite terms closer together was the driving force of the project.

The master plan was developed to provide different routes for different users to ensure the safety and comfort of the staff and the visitors alike.  In addition, a buffer zone placed between the formal embassy building and the residences ensured a physical and mental separation between work and home. This, in turn helps staff at keeping a work-life balance and to be able to unwind and relax after a tiring day at the embassy building.

The duality concept is also visible in the facade of the embassy building where the facade swings back and forth in harmony between the opaque and bold Ethiopian bricks and the light and transparent modern glass. Lastly, taking into consideration the climate and environmental conditions of the city and site, the buildings were oriented to get optimum exposure to sunlight and to get the most out of the winds for cross-ventilation during the summer season. The bricks on the facade also act as shading elements and are rotated according to the sun angle to provide shading when necessary while letting filtered sunlight into the buildings.

The Czech Republic embassy complex comprises of several buildings serving the ambassador, embassy staff, and the public. It was important to ensure the comfort and safety of the embassy staff, therefore, the residences were visually separated from the embassy building whilst the embassy building was open to the public with its visa and counselor department.
