Find out the benefits of natural light before you build your house.
The general assumption about sustainability is that it is costly, difficult to maintain, and impractical. However, truly sustainable designed spaces are not all that costly or difficult to maintain, on the contrary, sustainable spaces and buildings can be achieved through “primitive” and simple passive elements. Sustainable spaces can be achieved through initially understanding the environmental and architectural elements that impact our psychology and physiology and their impact on the environment and resources.
When it comes to talking about shelter, one of the primary elements is access to natural light. Often overlooked, natural daylight has many benefits that can help us lead a healthy lifestyle. Regardless of whether we live in a hot or cold climate, we seem to somehow always gravitate towards sunny bright spots. Similarly, exposure to natural light (whether indoors or outdoors)has been proven to improve mood, enhance morale, increase productivity, and boost overall satisfaction of building occupants.
It is important to understand that it all begins in the initial steps of design and planning. It is also important to know that it is not just a case of letting light into spaces, it is just as important to plan carefully so that different spaces have enough daylight during proper times. For instance, natural light in the morning increases alertness, thus, helping users to start their day and increase their productivity. This also helps in regulating the users biological clock and the sleep/awake cycle.
Natural light has many other benefits (health, psychology, economical, and environmental). Read along to find out more about how with correct and mindful design, you can live within healthy and nurturing spaces.
It is important to understand that it all begins in the initial steps of design and planning. It is also important to know that it is not just a case of letting light into spaces, it is just as important to plan carefully so that different spaces have enough daylight during proper times.
1. Vitamin D
One of the main benefits of receiving natural sunlight is that our skin gets to absorb Vitamin D.
The vitamin D is essential for our bodies as it reduces risk of heart disease, risk of depression, and many other diseases. Thus, having interiors that allow the natural light in will ensure we receive our daily dose of vitamin D from the sunlight.
2. Regulation of Sleep/wake cycle
Letting the sunlight into various rooms of the house allows our body to regulate itself and help us feel more alert during morning hours and more relaxed during night time – in absence of light. This has also proven to provide building’s occupants with better sleep at night.
Natural daylight and sunlight have been proven to elevate the mood of the users. This way, with a well lit and bright interiors, building users get to enjoy bright healthy interiors, thus, easing their communication and increasing their productivity.
It is no doubt that with a design that takes sunlight and natural daylight into account, the usage of electricity bills will also be reduced.
Thoughtfully positioning spaces and functions according to the sun and light will help occupants perform their tasks with natural sunlight. Building occupants will also reduce their usage of electric lighting and thus, reduce their electric lighting bills.
Another benefit is that with correct and thoughtful positioning, users can reduce their heating and cooling needs during winter and summer times.
It is important to note that artificial lighting is one of the main contributors to Carbon Dioxide and greenhouse gas emissions. However, with sufficient sunlight and daylight, users can reduce their carbon footprint through utilizing the natural light versus the artificial light.
It is important to know that sustainable spaces and communities originate from a well-integrated, multi-disciplinary design process including different professionals to ensure an optimum outcome to the users.
Similarly, a sustainable house or space integrates daylight and passive heating and cooling from the initial and primary spaces of design.
Finally, the topic of daylight and sunlight is a wide topic as every sustainability topic, stay tuned for the next blog article to learn and find out how you can make sure that your spaces are receiving enough daylight.
Until next time tracers, stay healthy , stay strong!
