A Biotech Startup is Utilizing Bacteria to Make Sustainable Dye for Denim

In an attempt to develop a greener dye market , a rising and a promising biotech company that goes by the name Huue has discovered a sustainable way to dye textiles.

As the consumers are beginning to become more eco-conscious and demanding textiles and fashion lines to be more transparent about where their garments come from and how they are made.. consumers are beginning to realize the detrimental effects of these long-lasting rich indigo denim wear.

In fact, the original blue jeans were dyed with an indigo dye that is plant based, however, as the market grew, the plant based dye was replaced with many chemicals in order to scale it, meet demand, and keep costs at minimum.

In response to this, a rising and a promising biotech company that goes by the name Huue has discovered a sustainable way to dye denim.

Biotech Startup

The biotech startup is led by two women co-founders and emerged from Tammy Hsu’s (co-founder) lab at the University of California-Berkeley. The lab work was initially examining enzymes in plants that produce colors in natural dyes and then attempt to recreate these colors utilizing biotechnology.

How do they do it ?

Huue states that they are able to replace toxic materials with lab grown dyes that produce and contain significantly less waste and environmental damage.

The biotech startups transforms sugar into dye. They essentially create microbes that mimic nature’s process and consume sugar to enzymatically produce dye.

This process does not require the use of petroleum to produce this dye in contrast to the indigo dye industry that consumes 100 kilograms of petroleum to produce as well removes the use of chemicals such formaldehyde.

As a result, the produced dye is a sustainable and a scalable dye that can revolutionize the $33 billion dye market and perhaps create “greener” blues.
