Design for Autism

A brief introduction to design for autism and what elements to consider.

This week we are bringing to light design for autism and what elements needed to be considered. If you’re designing or renovating your house and one of your family members is autistic, then read along this is your brief introduction to how to design an autistic friendly space! (Follow along the series for more detailed information)

If you’re unfamiliar with the topic, here’s a quick crash course:

Autism is a developmental disability that appears in early childhood and affects one’s social skills, communication skills, and self-regulation skills as well.

Data shows that about 1% of the population is diagnosed with autism and it is said to be the fastest growing disability in the United States (This increase could also mean that more people are aware and being diagnosed). According to the latest data, Hong Kong and South Korea are the top  two countries for the highest number of autism per 10,000 pupils.

The real cause of autism remains unknown or uncertain and it comes in many scales and variations, however, those diagnosed with autism are usually hyper-sensitive and hyper-aware of their environments. Therefore, it is important to help create environments and spaces with hyper-sensitive individuals in mind to help them thrive.

Data shows that about 1% of the population is diagnosed with autism and it is said to be the fastest growing disability in the United States.

Design for Senses

An autism friendly space takes into consideration the different elements and senses of a hyper-sensitive individual. The space should take into account the different senses and how an autistic individual may perceive several elements.

It is vital to have a strong communication between the architect and the family or the building user to be able to carry out interviews and discussions to learn about the different needs of the users.

Spaces

Hyper-sensitive individuals don’t respond well with surprises and uncertainties. Therefore, it is best to keep individuals in control of their spaces and make their environment and spaces as predictable as possible.

Having a clear sequence of spaces will help autistic individuals be more at ease and help them focus on their tasks. Furthermore, placing transition spaces between main spaces will help individuals prepare themselves for the coming spaces.

Examples : semi-open transition spaces, semi-transparent room dividers, etc.

It is also important to keep all interior edges and corners rounded , to reduce the risk of injuries for autistic children and individuals.

Proximity to Nature

Studies show that proximity and accessibility to nature helps reduce autistic individuals’ stress levels.

It can also aid in improving their sensory play and connect them with the outdoors, thus, connecting them with various textures, smells, and colors.

Clear Way-finding

Clear way-finding is another essential element to safe space planning and designing when it comes to designing for autism. A change in color and texture can subtly indicate a change in space with the sufficient predictability for individuals to feel in control of their environments.

Colors

While designing and planning interior spaces, it is best to stick to pastel and light colors.

It is best to stay away from stark white and bright primary colors. Using calm and cool colors such as tranquil blues, pinks, pale greens and purples, and neutral colors will have a more calming effect on autistic individuals.

Through the use of pale and light colors, the stimulation within the interiors will be less, thus, helping them focus on their tasks and calming their mind.

Designing for autistic individuals and hyper-sensitive individuals is no easy-task. There are many different elements and we shall tackle them one by one this week from the general guidelines to interior finishes to online source books.

Everyone has the right for a comfortable environment where they feel safe and are encouraged to thrive, therefore, we are dedicating this week to explore and educate on design for autism, so stay tuned for more detailed information and guides!

Until next time tracers, stay healthy, stay strong!
