Here are 10 ways we think you should try for a more sustainable Christmas this year!
As the famous song says it – Christmas is the most wonderful time of the year, however, that does not mean it is the most eco-friendly time.
Christmas is a time to appreciate loved ones and to celebrate. However, that should not mean that we produce waste
If you’re leading a conscious eco-friendly life, this is our quick guide for you to have a more sustainable Christmas this year!
This plant is the perfect match for a friend or family member that values their skin care routine due to its countless benefits.
This plant also happens to purifies the air from toxins! Aloe Vera collects carbon dioxide at night which is a suitable plant to keep in your bedroom to collect the carbon dioxide as one sleeps away at night.
This plant requires little maintenance as it needs watering one every week or two weeks, thrives in sunny bright areas around your house. It is also important to know that Aloe Vera is toxic to your furry friends so it is best to keep your plant out of their reach.
Similar to our first plant, Aloe Vera, the snake plant (also known as Mother-in-Law’s Tongue) is also one of the top air purifying plants.
It releases oxygen during night time as well and purifies the air from formaldehyde which is also present in some store-bought cleaning products.
This plant is happy anywhere indoors but prefers sunny spots and shade.
Watch out from over-watering as the roots will rot, therefore, water every 2/3 weeks. This plant is also mildly toxic to pets.

One of the best things you can do this Christmas is to rent your christmas tree. This means that you will rent it through the holidays and then give it back to be replanted!
I think this could be the best of both worlds where you can enjoy the real tree at home with its rich fragrance and then take it back to where it belongs.
If you could not find a company that caters for such a request, worry no more! the next best thing you can do is to ensure that your tree is FSC certified.
FSC – Forest Stewardship Council. This helps you ensure that your tree was grown in sustainably and socially responsible fashion. If you’d like to educate yourself more on this topic, I suggest reading this on their official website to get an overall idea (FSC – FAQ)
As we are slowly going back to lockdowns due to the pandemic, it is also the right time to get creative with your little ones over edible ornaments!
This will turn your Christmas tree at home into a work of art that is meaningful, creative, and unique!
If edible ornaments and kitchen is your chosen battleground, no worries! You can still be sustainable through not purchasing any new ornaments or through creating an event with your community and exchanging ornaments this Christmas!
Again, one of the bright sides of the pandemic is that most of us picked up a new skill or hobby – or have at some point joined the DIY hype. This is the right time to exhibit these skills by gifting your loved ones a handmade or knitted product!
This is an alternative to store bought decorations and could engage the whole family. This way, your house can be full of individualistic master pieces made by you and your loved ones.
During the holidays, a lot of wrapping paper gets wasted and thrown away. Unfortunately, a lot of it cannot be recycled and does not get re-used!
For a more sustainable Christmas, you can opt for fabric packaging that can be re-used afterwards! or even within a basket that can be reused afterwards.
We all get excited and thrilled during the holidays and then tend to over-buy groceries for Christmas dinner and then end up throwing it away.
This Christmas, try not to over-buy so that the food does not go to waste and try your best to decompose your left overs.
For a more sustainable Christmas, stop using disposable dinnerware as they are difficult to recycle. Opt for your cutlery at home for a more sustainable environment.
These are becoming more popular everyday and they are a great way to send out your greetings over the holiday with a bonus! These cards when put in soil will eventually decompose and have the seeds grow into plants.
A sustainable Christmas also includes the distance that your gifts and needs travel, thus, shopping locally will not only reduce your carbon footprint but will also encourage small businesses within your town.
Having a sustainable Christmas is a great step towards a healthier and more conscious holidays that hopefully will lead to fewer consuming and lead us towards more creative ways to spend the holidays with our loved ones!
