Biophilic Design Series : A Town Conquered by Nature
An abandoned village that is now overgrown by nature could be an example to our ideal and future cities.
The image above is surprisingly not a render of an architecture student’s dream project, in fact, it is an abandoned village in china that goes by the name Houtouwan
The abandoned village was a fishing village and is one of the almost 400 islands. Originally, the village housed more than 2,000 fishermen along with their families and contained more than 500 houses. However, the fishermen started leaving the village gradually as the mainland promised a more prosperous life and a more economically beneficial one.
The village now has been deserted for more than 15 years. As of 2018 , there is only five residents left in the village and the rest conquered and invaded by nature. This village is also currently a touristic destination.
However, I think the important element to take from this village is that biophilic design and co-living with nature does not have to be expensive or high maintenance. Somehow and if we allow it to, nature can find its way through our urban jungle.
