A Biotech Startup is Transforming the Fashion and Textile Industry

A look at a green biotech startup producing degradable bioyarn.

Today we decided to shed light on a rising industry that promises biomaterials that are degradable for healthier and greener future.  One of these exciting initiatives and forward thinking is Algiknit.

Algiknit is a biotech startup that was founded in 2017 and is currently located in New York, United States of America.

The biotech startup was initiated from a group of students with a winning concept at the first Biodesign Challenge (2016). However, the concept and realization of the bio-yarn has been iterated and improved since 2016.

It is really encouraging and promising to see a successful and forward thinking collaboration between designers and scientists towards a circular economy where yarn can be both durable as well as degradable.

The startup essentially uses kelp to create these bioyarns with lower carbon footprint as well as significantly less harmful impact on the environment than traditional yarn and textile materials.

Why kelp ?

Kelp happens to be one of the most regenerative organisms on the planet.

It is essentially a large and long brown seaweed (seaweed is a general term, and kelp is a specific kind of seaweed). The kelp is identifiable through its tough stalk with a broad frond that is divided into several strips. Kelp can be found in cold coastal waters (initially in the northern hemisphere).

Now you may be wondering, what is special about kelp and how is it better than other plants well…

Kelp grows in the ocean, thus, it eliminates the need for fertilizers, pesticides, as well as the need for irrigation.

Since kelp is one of the most regenerative organisms in our planet, this means that we can rapidly grow more kelp without depleting this resource.

Kelp also happens to absorb carbon dioxide (CO2) whilst filtering surrounding water.

How is the fiber made ?

According to the official biotech startup’s website, the fiber or polymer is extracted from unused kelp. They then create a hydrogel which is then extruded into a curing bath. This results in crosslinks ,as shown in the above image, and a filament is created. The filament is then winded and placed onto cones. The end result is a bioyarn with properties similar to that of polyester fiber.

Kelp happens to be one of the most regenerative organisms on the planet.

How is its strength in comparison to other fibers ?

Well, the current results show that the fiber is stronger than cotton and wool.

Does it come in different colors ?

The bioyarn happens to take natural dye very well and result in far more lively colors than synthetic dyes.

What does this mean for the fashion and textile industry ?

I’d like to believe that on average, consumers are becoming more environmentally conscious as we are already witnessing higher demand for cleaner and more eco-conscious brands and ethical values from the, generally, wasteful fashion and textile industry.

Recycled fashion is a possible solution, however, I believe it is crucial to also revolutionize how we make and produce garments so that these garments not just reduce or limit their harmful impact but also completely disintegrate once disposed of and can absorb carbon dioxide from the air.

Algiknit is definitely a promising initiative that I would like to see become more popular even among hobbyists and knitters since fiber arts have gained more attention in the past year or so. As usually, these biotech and advanced material trials only get to be explored by the high end industry.
