Biophilic Design Series : Plants that Grow Well Together

The pandemic has dawned over the world and halted most of our plans, lots of jobs were lost, and loved ones missed. However, the bright side of the pandemic is that during lockdown we had the luxury to slow down and pay attention to how we’re living and enrich our hobbies.

If you’re an amateur who is just getting started to grow your own urban jungle, this post is for you!

Due to the density of cities, urbanites usually have limited and confined space to attempt to grow some of their foods.

Thus, today we will shed light on plants that grow well next to each other for better and healthier urban garden.

Let’s start with the first of many in biophilic design series!

1. Tomatoes & Basil

Tomatoes and basil are a famous couple among sauces and surprisingly enough, they also thrive together as companions in the soil.

Planting basil 1ft (approximately 30 cm) away from tomatoes will help improve the flavor of tomato as well as aid in its growth as well as increase the tomato yield.

It is also known that basil as well as dill are great companions to tomatoes as they protect the tomato plant from the hornworm.

Other plants that help and go well with tomato are asparagus, carrots, celery, onions, lettuce, parsley, and spinach.

2. Cucumbers and Nasturtiums

Growing cucumbers in an urban and tight setting could be challenging – at least it was for me. The cucumber plants actually thrived on the terrace, however, they brought enormous amount of insects that I could not keep growing these cucumbers.

However, having nasturtiums will repel aphids and beetles and keep them protected.

Other companion plants include beans, celery, corn, lettuce, dill, peas, and radish.

3. Roses and Garlic

Experts and gardeners couple these two plants together as the garlic plant helps repel rose pests and keep it looking healthy and lush.

Another bonus is that these garlic chives compliment the roses during spring time with their white flowers.
