Your quick introduction to soil types.
More often than not, we as architects tend to be involved and immersed with the conceptual design process as well as the experiential and quality of spaces that are created by our designs we, therefore, tend to neglect an important and a crucial element and a possible asset of the site – the soil. The soil type and nature of the site can dictate and guide architects through the design process, resulting in architecture that responds to its environment and is in harmony with its surroundings. Sustainable design begins with clear and thorough evaluation of the site.
Whether you’re an architect or not, this is your quick guide to the different soil types.
Large particles visible to the naked eye.
Example : gravel and sand.
low percentage of void spaces
More stable as a foundation
More permeable than fine grained soils and drain better
Less susceptible to frost action
Much smaller particles than the coarse-grained particles.
Example : silt and clay.
Unstable as they shrink and swell with changes of moisture levels
Less permeable
Susceptible to frost action
As mentioned before, the stability of the soil as a foundation material is a critical and key point which can essentially direct the design of the building. The different factors that come into play when determining the suitability of the soil on site are stratification, composition, density of the soil bed, variations in particle size, presence or absence of ground water.
Another important element to consider within soil types on site is the water table. The presence of ground water can be harmful and can reduce the bearing capacity of the soil, thus, any groundwater should be removed. This also relates to the soil types present where the coarse grained soils drain better and are more permeable whereas the fine grained soils such as silt and clay are less permeable.
This is the maximum unit pressure a foundation is permitted to impose vertically or laterally on the soil mass.
The high-bearing soil offer no risk and a greater design freedom, whereas the low bearing soils may dictate the structure's form and design.
This is critical in determining the bearing capacity of the granular soils.
This is a measure of the soil's ability to resist displacement when an external force is applied (cohesion and internal friction).
Layering of the soil.
This is the level where beneath, the soil is saturated with groundwater.
