This is a wake up call for all the urban dwellers out there!
As I am writing this, I am slowly becoming aware of the urban and city noise that I have gotten used to. The sound of never ending construction sites, the train passing by, the continuous array of cars (with an occasional horn by an angry driver!) – may I also add the episodic sirens of either police cars or ambulance cars.
So if you’re also living in a dense and busy city like me, then this peculiar melody is no stranger to your ears! I understand, we all gravitate towards cities due to the abundance and promise of opportunity and prosperity there, however, this comes at a cost to our health – and to the earth’s health.
Noise pollution is just as dangerous as air pollution. Therefore, noise is not just a mere irritant or disturbance, it can have serious health effects on us (regardless of the age).
So for this blog post, I would like to quickly go over the basics so that you and I become aware of the noise around us, sources, and what levels are acceptable for us.
Noise pollution or high levels of noise aren't just sources of disturbance. Constant exposure to high levels of noise have several harmful effects on us such as hypertension and cases of insomnia or lack of quality sleep.
Noise pollution or high levels of noise aren’t just sources of disturbance. Constant exposure to high levels of noise have several harmful effects on us such as hypertension and cases of insomnia or lack of quality sleep (which is vital for a healthy lifestyle). It has also been linked with heart diseases, hearing loss, and, worsened immune system. Being exposed to noise on a regular basis is also directly linked to increased levels of anxiety.
Unfortunately, noise pollution does not just harm humans, it also affects wildlife and marine life. The high levels of noise are making it harder for animals to identify predators, communicate, and mate. This greatly effects the balance of our ecosystem, threatening our continuity on Earth.
Additionally, marine life is also facing challenges due to noise created by humans or man-made machines. The aquatic creatures are also finding it hard to communicate with one another above the noise that we create in the oceans and seas.
On a more positive note, people are more aware of the health and dangers of noise pollution. This has also been reflected through rigorous research and experiments to reduce the noise across various fields from engineers, to mechanics, real estate agents, to designers and architects.
One of the initial things you can do is start with your own space and social circle. With the help of design, you can make your home , a quiet and serene oasis. Additionally, through spreading awareness, you can encourage your neighbors, family, and friends to also start making steps towards a more noise-friendly city.
