Key points to start a sustainable school for a greener future.
Whether you’re thinking of opening a sustainable school or choosing a sustainable school for your child, there are several factors to consider and many layers that come at play. Sustainability goes beyond the surface of energy efficiency and recycling, it aims to improve and develop the quality of life of people and the future generations to come.
Here’s our main list that qualify a school as sustainable – enjoy!
Schools used be at the center of the community, holding a central position within the community as a cultural and educational hub. Unfortunately, this is not the case for most schools anymore as they are located away from the community and can be reached by buses or cars only.
A sustainable school starts with its location and community, a school within the community that can be reached by walking or by a bike will bring many benefits to the community.
Advantages :
1. Physical activity for the children.
2. Brings the community together and creates a safer environment (if everyone’s child is biking and walking to school, the community will act and become closer together and become more involved).
3. It will provide the children with independence, confidence, and responsibility through being able to commute to the school back and forth independently and with friends or siblings.
Locating the school within a community and at a proximity to the neighborhood can make the school a multi-purpose cultural / educational hub for the community. Residents can use it after school hours to play sports and to come together to hold workshops or seminars. This way, the community can enjoy more free open space by re-using the same space for more than one function.
In order to change and develop children with a sustainable mindset, it is important that their spaces and surroundings are sustainable and are set as examples for them to learn from. The building materials and systems that the school is built with and is using should be sustainable, reused or, recycled when possible, or recyclable when possible as well.
A healthy school utilizes passive systems to enrich its interiors and create healthy spaces for the staff and students and to exhibit sustainable design potential to the young generations. It is also vital to natural ventilation, and access to good views (connection with the outdoors).
Having classrooms and staff rooms that value indoor air quality returns great results among the students and staff. There is a strong correlation between concentration levels, productivity , and the purity of indoor air as well as the quality of the indoor environment. The quality of indoor air can be enhanced through the incorporation of operable windows, cross ventilation, and plants within the classrooms.
As I mentioned before, children learn by imitation. Therefore, preaching and only talking about sustainability will only do so much, the school has to show and set an example for students to exhibit and experiment along with the students the different sustainable systems and options available at hand.
The school can incorporate rainwater harvesting to show and teach its students about its mechanics and components while also benefiting from it to use it throughout the school. The school can also incorporate grey-water recycling to irrigate the landscape.
The school can also include solar energy to teach the students and to let them experiment with its products and how they can obtain energy from different renewable resources.
Outdoor play is crucial for children as they get to explore their powers and build their sensory and social skills. Having a well designed outdoors ensures the students can learn inside and outside the classroom.
An example of a new emerging type of playground is natural playgrounds, you can read this article about the benefits of natural playgrounds.
Apart from surrounding children and the community with a sustainably built school, it is important to include sustainability activities and actions within the students’ curriculum.
Few of the spaces and principles that can be added to the curriculum are many and there’s not direct guide but here’s what I have incorporated in my list of sustainable activities in the school curriculum!
Creating a school vegetable garden for children to take care of and to grow will build responsible and caring individuals. The vegetable patch will allow young children to learn about different fruits and vegetables, what nutrients they need, and what conditions they require. Having different vegetable patches will also create friendly competition among different classes or grades.
Adding little furry friends to the school community with also instill great social skills within the children (of course, keeping in mind that some children may be allergic).
This will also help children to grow knowing that they share the planet with other species and they have the responsibility to care for it and to protect it, thus, increasing their empathy towards others.
The famous 3Rs , Reduce, reuse, and recycle are a great concept to introduce to children throughout their classrooms’ props, toys, books, or even playground.
This will teach them and introduce them to different ways to acquire what they want in a more sustainable manner.
We live in a world with limited resources, therefore, it is important to instill the sharing values among children.
Sharing can be in the form of sharing books, items and toys among different classes so that children learn to share and to work in a team or among others.
Lastly but not least, it is of no doubt that universal and inclusive design is crucial within school design. Children should all feel equal and empowered within their school borders, they should feel fearless and conquer all what they fear. The universal design will also show students that different people have different needs, but we all share this planet.
There are many elements to what a sustainable school is and what it should include or look like. A sustainable school is more than just expensive mechanical systems, it is a school that is part of a community, that gives back to the community, and that teaches the young and instills sustainability values in them for a better brighter future.
