Nowadays children spend less time outdoors and playing outdoors due to several factors such as the emergence of digital gadgets, games, safety issues and fears, and the most recent one being, COVID-19. According to experts, children are ought to spend at least 3 hours outdoors a day, whereas some children are spending only 4-7 minutes playing outdoors and about over 7 hours in front of a screen according to childmind.org
However, we can’t just blame external factors for the children playing less outside, so let’s try pointing fingers at the playground itself! The regular and most common type of playground is the one we all know with the colorful slide, climbing stairs or wall, presenting an already conquered challenge to the children. This not only makes the playground less interesting, but it also downplays the potentials and creativity of the children and the endless ways a playground can be utilized.
The benefits of playing outside goes beyond fresh air, it improves social skills, motor skills, and sensory skills of the children as they learn how to play with other children, share the space, and engage in various activities demanding different skills and senses.
Fortunately, the emergence of natural playground is coming back and is being welcomed by many urban dwellers wanting their children to engage in natural and open-ended play. Studies have shown that with natural playground and unstructured play , children tend to spend twice the time outside than in the regular and structured playground.
So what is a natural playground, what can you expect from a natural playground, and can you have one in your community or neighborhood? Read along to find out !

A natural playground is essentially an open-ended space to play. It consists of elements from nature such as tree logs, plants, boulders, tree stumps, sand, water, tree-houses, bridges, ropes, and drainage paths. It presents unstructured play for children so that they can explore, discover, learn, and create as much as they can without structured tailored play like the play structures we are all familiar with.
Natural playground having employed natural elements and structures and earth are definitely safer for children to use and be in contact with more than the popular recycled rubber tiers floors that may cause allergies for sensitive children.
A natural playground being an open-ended outdoor space for children to play, enhances and sharpens their fine motor skills, problem solving, and improves their sensory skills. Sensory play requires children to use different senses with the smell of different roses or textures (tree logs, water, drainage paths, etc) and employ different skills and strengths to play.
Children also get to learn how to share and work together and improve their social skills. This is done through group play and working as a team to build something or to pass certain obstacles within the playground.
Okay so now that we have become familiar with natural playgrounds and their benefits, so what?
well, you can take several steps towards encouraging and having a natural playground for your children to play with or for your school or child care center.
You can start from today encouraging and raising your opinion within your community and neighborhood and suggesting a change in the playground. You can also start by initiating your own natural playground for your children in your backyard or even apartment!
If you own a child care center, then you have the power to provide your young students with a natural playground and extra time spent outdoors that will improve their health and skills.
